Diablo 4 Season 15 gives longtime players a reason to keep an eye on their chat window. The Mythic Chat Gem brings back a curious piece of Diablo 2 history, and it's unlike most D4 items you'll pick up during a seasonal run. It doesn't announce itself with a dramatic new appearance, either. At first glance, it looks like an ordinary Crude Sapphire. The real surprise comes after you equip it and carry on playing.
A Gem That Talks Back
Pop the Chat Gem into an amulet, a ring, or the seasonal Leoric's Crown, then watch the chat log. Every so often, it posts a message without any input from you. You might see "Chat Gem Activated," followed later by "Chat Gem Deactivated," or get the familiar "Mooooooo" that older players may recognize. "Perfect Gem Activated" can appear too. There are also strings of numbers, though their meaning remains a question for players to puzzle over. Its flavor text suggests the effect is barely noticeable, which feels about right. You could be halfway through an event before you spot a message.
Where the Chat Gem Drops
The place to look is a Waking Nightmare Portal called Diablo Hellfire: The Cornerstone. These portals can appear during open-world activities, so you won't find this one waiting at a fixed spot on the map. Step inside and you'll enter a small, diamond-shaped room with no enemies to fight. There's an object in the middle called the World's Cornerstone. Open it for a chance at the Chat Gem, along with other valuable loot and runes. The gem isn't guaranteed, so finding the right portal is only part of the hunt. You may need several visits before it appears.
Making the Most of Your Search
Whisper events are a useful place to start. Check your map for the pink event icons with a triangle, head over, and complete the activity. Then move on to another nearby event rather than waiting around for a portal. Helltides are worth your time as well. Fight Hellborne when they appear, and don't ignore a Treasure Goblin if one crosses your path. Both can provide opportunities for a portal to show up. World Bosses have also been associated with these portals, but roaming between events and clearing Helltides gives you more to do while you look.
What to Expect From the Hunt
The Chat Gem is more of a conversation piece than a conventional upgrade. If you're browsing cheap D4 items for your build, it's worth knowing that this particular gem's appeal is its chat messages and its connection to the older game. Keep an eye out for the Cornerstone portal as you play, open the object when you find it, and enjoy the occasional odd message if the gem drops.
